Lower Animals (World University Library)

　1968年刊である．タイトルは，『Lower Animals』で，訳せば『下等動物』である．だが，「下等」という言葉にとらわれていけない．本書は，無脊椎動物全般への著者のオマージュでもあるのだ，
30年弱前に購入して、今だに手元に置いている．手放せないでいる理由をあえてあげるとすれば，次の一文につきる．寄生生物に関する章の最後の文章．

It is fine to be strong and swift and brainy. With enough elaboration of sensory，nervous and manipulative equipment it is possible to move mountains.We tend to think that because we can control our environment, more or less，this is the ultimate goal of all animal species, the end to which the evolution of animal types must inevitably proceed as a result of interspecific competition. The sessile animals show that it isn't and the parasitic animals, which, it is well to remember, probably outnumber all the rest of us, show that survival by no means depends upon the capacities on which we so pride ourselves. We think brains are important, because that is our speciality. It is salutary to reflect that there are plenty of other ways of making a living.

もう1点，気に入っていた点をあげるとすれば，眼の系統進化についての図版である．


これまで、著者のMartin John Wellsについて気に留めたことはなかったのだが，今回調べてみてびっくりした．Cambridge大学の先生だったのだが，SFの創始者として有名なH.G.Wellsの孫ではないですか． The Guardian, Wednesday 25 February 2009 に，Alan Findlay and John Messengerによる追悼記，“
Martin Wells：Distinguished biologist inspired by the hidden wonders of marine life”を発見（URL)．

The overused expression "a good work-life balance" could have been invented to describe Martin.

とあります．人生の達人という感じです．
